When people talk about traveling they generally mean Over Seas. But when I talk about traveling I generally mean, traveling in this most amazing country in which I live. Australia.
There are so many places in Australia I have never seen even though I have lived here all my life. I guess I just never had the opportunity or never took it if I did.
If you have an opportunity to travel within Australia, take it. Our home is amazing. You can go to each place in each different season and it will be different every time. Then if you did the same the following year it would be different again.
One of my favorite places to travel to in Australia is the Victorian High Country. I love every inch of it. There is always something new to see, it is constantly changing, nature at it’s best.
Craig’s Hut has been on my bucket list for a long time. In January 2014 I was hoping to go but it was 40+ degrees Celsius and high fire danger, we opted not to go. One 4wd track in, One 4wd track out. So you really need to plan your trip carefully and allow for changing conditions.
So on Friday 5th of December 2014 was the big day. I was staying with my friend Sue who lives in Mansfield in Victoria. Sue had been to Craig’s Hut before and this time her friend Warren was driving us to Craig’s Hut, via Mt Buller and across the mountains to Mt. Sterling where Craig’s hut stands.
When we set out it was warm and quite humid in Mansfield, we went first to Mt Buller, I had never been to the ski fields before so I was quite chuffed to see it the chair lifts and all. When we were there the weather changed dramatically within a few minutes, the cloud and fog came in quite quickly, I was stunned at how the weather changed so quickly and so dramatically. I now know why Sue had asked me if I had a jacket to take with me, to which I replied no, as it was after all summer and hot. Thank goodness she had taken a spare jacket for me. It was not long before the rain set in. I thought this would mean we would have to turn around and go back. But Warren, having driven there before was more than happy to keep going onto Mt Sterling. I am so glad he did. I have to say at no time did I feel unsafe with Warren driving across narrow roads with deep ruts and dirt roads and tracks that were really no more than rough fire tracks. I enjoyed every minute of it.
If you ever get a chance to go to Craigs Hut, take it. You won’t be sorry. But at the same time. Put the camera down and just look at the view, the weather changed from sunshine to fog, to hail to lightening and thunder storms, I have to say it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Just do it.
Here are some of the pictures I took from the time we left Mansfield until we returned. I hope you enjoy. If you do please feel free to leave a comment and share this page with your friends.
